Solo Bass 1 is a collection of four interesting and inventive new works for unaccompanied double bass. Each one offers a range of accessible musical and technical challenges, within a relatively short time span, and are aimed at the good intermediate bassist. They would be suitable for any recital or audience, each exploting a wealth of colours and idioms, and utilising much of the range of the solo double bass, and none outstaying their welcome.

Cheryl Frances-Hoad - The Ogre's Chamber
Composed for the 2007 BIBF 'One-Minute Wonder's' Competition, which attracted more than 150 entries from throughout the world, The Ogre's Chamber has a moto perpetuo feel, with its strong forward momentum to the fore, and should last 58.2 seconds. There is scope to create a dramatic soundscape, using a three octave range, and has much to challenge and inspire.

Ottavio Negro - Chiaroscuro
The composer writes: "I liked the idea of giving the double bass a voice of its own, apart from its usual support for the orchestra. I tried to produce a coherent statement within the limit of about one minute, exploring at the same time the expressive possibilities of the double bass as a solo instrument."
Chiaroscuro was composed for the 2007 BIBF 'One-Minute Wonders' Competition and was premiered by David Heyes on 17 June 2007 at the William Appleby Music Centre in Doncaster.

Tony Osborne - Reel Time
Tony Osborne is the most prolific and successful British composer writing for the double bass today. Reel Time was composed for Double Bass 2000 and is fast and energetic, full of strong forward momentum, with a lively and powerful message to convey. The effective use of double stops and harmonics adds to the excitement and this would be ideal as a concert work or as educational repertoire to explore the possibilities of the solo double bass.

Chris Brown - tomorrow's sky
The composer writes: "Written in March and April 2003, and revised in 2006, tomorrow's sky is one way in which a composer can answer the needs for hope of people caught in global conflict - a war. Written for David Heyes, and based on a quote from the novel 'When We Were Orphans' by Kazuo Ishiguro (Remains of the Day), this short piece is simple in structure with its opening aggressive theme and gentler, prayer-like counter melody gradually calming the former - the tragedy remains."
