Richard Storry writes:"Originally written as a complete set of melodic, evocative and progressive pieces for students, I am delighted that this selection has been chosen for inclusion in the MTB guitar exam syllabus. As progress is made through them I hope that students will feel that the musical rewards from the pieces will be worth the effort of meeting the gradually increasing technical demands; and I hope they will enjoy learning and performing them just as much as I enjoyed composing them!"

Reflections: Making frequent use of adjacent strings, this piece should be played freestroke; and it provides a good opportunity to develop the right hand ami fingering.

Exploring the Old House: The important thing here is to try and capture the eerie atmosphere of this dark and creaky house, but to also increase the intensity at the halfway point.

Memories of Moscow: It is the Bb in bars 5 and 13 which really give this piece its Russian flavour, so use the preceding open E to cover the position change and ensure you land on the Bb neatly.

In the Cool of a Spanish Night: There is plenty of scope for expressive rubato here, though take care to maintain a feeling for the overall rhythmic shape, to avoid losing musical integrity.

The Nostalgic Photograph: This piece gives the opportunity to produce some lovely phrase shaping. Allow the contours of the phrases to create the necessary shape and shade and allow the music to emerge fully.

I Remember: This piece contains numerous position changes. Take care to use arm movement to effect the change, rather than leading with the hand.

Since leaving the Royal Academy of Music (London) with high honours and a recital diploma, in 1989, Richard Storry has pursued a busy and successful career.

Recent notable credits include the music for Anton Chekhov's Three Sisters, starring Kristin Scott Thomas, which was performed in London's West End and subsequently broadcast by the BBC. Richard's music for Rumplestiltskin received over 300 performances in its first year alone and the musical, Kennedy, was nominated three times for the RUTAC Drama Awards.

In addition to being in demand as a teacher and adjudicator, Richard Storry's work as a composer is recognised both nationally and internationally, including two commissions for the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra. His musical play The Brothers Lionheart was voted best children's show in the 2009 Edinburgh Festival, and his first novel The Cryptic Lines has been adapted for the stage.

Richard Storry travels worldwide as an examiner for the ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music) and was recently elected Associate of the Royal Academy of Music (ARAM).
