The composer writes: 'These short pieces were written to explore some of my favourite musical atmospheres, in a format congenial to the solo double bass. The light playfulness of 'Wakening', with its repeated fragments and shifting rhythmic emphases; the hypnotic insistence of 'Expression', where piano and bass initially share the theme in a sustained unison; and finally the arrival at 'Still Waters', sharing much of the same quasi minimalist DNA, but in a more peaceful context.'

Three Miniatures was first performed in the Lunchtime Recital Series at London's Royal Opera House on 31 October 2011 by Paul Kimber (double bass) and Stephen Bettaney (piano).

This edition includes piano accompaniments for both solo and orchestral tunings.

Paul Kimber was born in Northern Ireland and studied double bass with Barry Young, and at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama with Thomas Martin. He also studied film composition with Peter Howell. Paul is a Section Principal Double Bassist with the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, and has previously held Co-Principal positions with English National Opera and the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

As a soloist Paul has performed at London's Barbican and Queen Elizabeth Halls, aiming to programme a wide range of music, including some of his own compositions. Other writing projects include compositions, and many arrangements and orchestrations, commissioned by the LPO, BT Scottish Ensemble, Kidenza Childrens' Concerts and Ragdoll Worldwide. His 'Motor City Fanfare' has proved a popular concert opening for the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

Paul has a longstanding involvement in jazz performing and writing, with an ongoing weekly duo residency in London's west end, many performances with his own quartet as well as with other notable British jazz musicians and the release of two critically acclaimed albums.
