Nesting Cranes was written in 2000 for Tony Alcock and was premiered by him on 29 October 2000 at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music & Drama. It was subsequently awarded 1st prize in the 2001 BIBF Composition Contest and performed at the 3rd Wells Double Bass Weekend.

Scottish composer Tommy Fowler (b.1948) is a prolific and active composer, although he only began to compose in 1991 when he moved to Glasgow. For over twenty years he worked as a journalist and broadcaster in his native north-east Scotland but, having decided on a complete career change, took a music degree at Glasgow University graduating in 1995 with a BMus, with honours and, in 2001, with a Ph.D - both in composition.

He has written in practically every genre and has received performances and broadcasts throughout Britain, and particularly in Scotland where he was described as 'among the brightest of the current healthy crop of compositional talent'.

His works have been performed by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Ensemble Bash, Cappella Nova, Hilliard Ensemble and significant works include the percussion ballet 'St Kilda' (1997), Bassoon Concerto (1996), 'The Dance of the Asrai' (1993/8) for string quartet and 'A White Fan Spreading Out Lasting Forever' (2001) for solo clarinet.
