Life Sentence was composed in 2000 and was premiered at Wells Cathedral School. It was commissioned with funds from The Ida Carroll Trust as part of the DOUBLE BASS 2000 project - an initiative to commission more than 100 pieces for double bass over a ten-year period.
The piece is modern and dramatic, offering musical and technical challenges in equal measure and would be a useful introduction to contemporary music. It utilises the orchestral range of the double bass and demonstrates a modern, yet still accessible and approachable idiom for any adventurous and open-minded bassist.
Adam Gorb is Head of Composition at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester and is a successful and prolific composer, writing in many genres.
The edition includes piano accompaniments for both solo and orchestral tunings.
