The Christmas Choral & Vocal Music series

Recital Music has developed a large, exciting and eclectic catalogue of Christmas music for choirs in recent years. Some works are published for the first time, others are in new editions, and we aim to provide accessible and enjoyable choral music for choirs of all ages and abilities. Enjoy!

Composed in 1916, Lullay, my liking (Op.34, No.2) is the second work in a set of 'Five Partsongs' for mixed voices by Gustav Holst (1874-1934).

Set to a traditional 15th-century text, this most evocative and ethereal work for unaccompanied voices would be ideal for any choir or seasonal occasion. Each verse is set for solo soprano, although this could be effectively divided between a number of soloists or voices, contrasted by a modal and slow moving four-part chorus in A minor/major.

The setting creates an atmosphere of beautiful simplicity, particularly effective in a church or cathedral with a spacious acoustic, and demonstates Holst's wonderful skills and mastery when using a limited harmonic and tonal palette.
