The Heritage Series series

The history of the double bass features many player-composers who created a wealth of music for bassists of all abilities. Recital Music publish a wide and eclectic range of music by these important figures from the history of the instrument, particularly from the 19th and early 20th-centuries, and more works are in preparation. Some names are well known today, others almost forgotten, but each made a valuable contribution to the repertoire of the double bass and helped create a unqiue repertoire which deserves to be performed.

Published in C.F. Schmidt's ground-breaking series of works for double bass of 1903, compiled and edited by Frantisek Simandl, Schwabe's Romanze has been long out of print. This edition includes piano accompaniments for both solo and orchestra tunings. The music is romantic and accessible, typical of many works from the end of the 19th-century, and is a lyrical and enjoyable addition to the intermediate solo repertoire. It would be suitable for anyone who is just beginning to play in low thumb posiiton and offers few challenges for the confident and enterprising young bassist.

Romanze was also published by Fr. Kistner (Leipzig) and this edition also included a version for cello. Recital Music's new edition is the first to include piano accompaniments for both solo and orchestral tunings.

German bassist Oswald Schwabe (1846-1909) was Professor of Double Bass at Leipzig Royal Conservatoire and Principal Bass of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. He studied with Emanuel Storch and was a successful teacher in his own right. His works for double bass include a book of Technical Studies, Romance (Db,Pno), Adagio (Db,Pno) and Cavatina (Db,Pno).
