Recital Music

Fizz @ 50

Fizz @ 50 is a new initiative by David Heyes and Recital Music to commission fifty works for double bass and piano. The project is now completed, with eleven countries represented and many works have already been performed and published.

David Heyes, founder of Recital Music, celebrated his 50th birthday in September 2010 and the idea of a project including the number 50 seemed appealing. Having been inspired by NMC's 2007/8 project to commission the British Songbook by asking almost 100 British composers to write a new song and offering a bottle of champagne in lieu of a commission fee, was the key to the double bass project. Once the title was confirmed the project was up and running.

Composers around the world were asked to write a work for double bass and piano, lasting about 3 minutes, and ideally for school-age players, although these were only guidelines and therewas scope for everything to be included in the project. Composers from 11 countries agreed to write for Fizz @ 50 and some have very kindly offered to write without a fee/bottle of champagne, while others have expressed a preference for vodka and beer.... Recital Music has pledged 25 bottles of champagne to Fizz @ 50 and we have been so pleased that another 25 friends have each agreed to give a bottle of champagne to support the project.

We approached many composers who had written for double bass before and also a number who were new to Recital Music and to the double bass. Most have been very pleased to be part of the project - a number had to decline because of other commissions - and seven composers didn't even respond.

All the works will be premiered at various bass workshops and concerts between 2011-13 and most will be published by Recital Music. All 50 works have now arrived and the standard has been superb. After each has been premiered most will be published and the series will hopefully be a unique and valuable teaching and recital resource for young bassists around the world.
