2010 Competition

The 2010 Recital Music Double Bass Composition Competition attracted 55 entries from 14 countries (Argentina, Australia, Belarus, Belgium, Canada, Eire, Germany, Greece, Israel, Italy, Slovenia, Spain, UK, USA). 27 works were inspired by the four Galilean moons of Jupiter and the Open category had 28 entries.
There were many intriguing and interesting works, in various styles and idioms, incorporating the many and varied possibilities of the solo double bass. Some works concentrated on the lower orchestral range of the instrument whereas others explored the entire range of the double bass.

Recital Music, on behalf of the judges, would like to thank all the composers for taking part in the 2010 competition. It was a great pleasure and privilege to read and listen to so many fascinating pieces for double bass and we hope to work with a number of composers over the coming years. Recital Music has always followed a policy of supporting contemporary music - in any style or idiom - and we hope that our growing catalogue reflects the quality and wealth of the double bass music being written today. It is gratifying to know that so many composers are willing to write for the instrument in a serious and committed way - hopefully leaving its 'elephantine' image behind - and the future looks very positive for the double bass.

All the entries will added to the Recital Music archive which now holds more than 5,000 works for double bass.

Written adjudications will be sent to composers who requested this during next week.
